The main caps are intentionally made in a smaller size so that line boring can be performed for installation. Metal and crank journals must be measured to determine the clearance. After measuring the metal and crank journals, the clearance is determined and line boring is performed to set the line. If there are grooves they will be shaved off during the line boring process.
