MAZDA Familia
about Familia
The Familia is a long running line of smaller cars. It has been sold in many areas of the world, under different name badges, most recently, as the Mazda 323.
The 1995 BH model was released internationally in 4 different versions, the 3-door hatchback (Neo), 4-door sedan (Protege/Familia), 4-door hardtop sedan (Lantis), and the 5-door hatchback (Lantis/Astina).
The Mazda Familia Van was changed to a re-badged station wagon-version of the Nissan Sunny. The Familia cars were larger than the earlier models, and were available with a handful of different engines, the 1.5 L Z5, FI, 16-valve DOHC with 89 hp, the 1.8 L B8 with 114 hp, the 2.0 L KF V6 FI 24-valve DOHC outputting 144 hp, the 1.3 L B3 with 74 hp, the 1.8 L BP FI 16-valve DOHC featuring 131 hp, and finally the 2.0 L RF Diesel 8-valve 71 hp engine. There was even a MAZDASPEED touring kit released in Asia for the 96-98 Familia.
The final generation was named the BJ Familia, and was introduced in 1998/1999. Available body styles were the sedan, 5-door S-Wagon (Protegé5), 3-door hatchback, and the traditional 5-door wagon. The 1999 platform saw updates to the chassis, now based on the larger Mazda 626, also providing more engine choices. The van models were kept, now based on the Wingroad. A 2.0 L gas engine was offered from '01. 2001 also saw a limited-edition released in the USDM, called the Protegé MP3, featuring a new tuned suspension, 17" Racing Hart wheels, and a 10 hp increase, bringing the total to 140 hp. The next year saw a Protegé5 station wagon brought to market. In 2003 a Mazdaspeed tuned Protegé was released, featuring a 70 hp turbocharged engine, full Racing Beat suspension, redesigned 17-inch wheels, larger four-wheel disc brakes.
This Generation is also still in production, in Asia as the Mazda Genki, and in some South American countries badged as The Mazda Allegro. Each Allegro keep in the styling of the last generation 323/Protege/Astina/Familia.
The Familia is a minority in the tuning world of Japan. When tuned, it is most often seen in the American influenced Spo-Com scene.
