about FD3S RX-7

The 3rd. gen. RX-7 FD was an outright sports car, by Japanese standards. Featuring a new aerodynamic, futuristic-looking body design. The 13B-REW engine was a sequential twin-turbocharged system, producing 252 hp initially, and 276 hp by the time production ended in 2002. In Japan, Mazda sold the RX-7 through its Efini brand. Series 7 (1996–1998) Saw minor changes to the car, including an upgraded ECU and manifold. In Japan, the Series 7 RX-7 was sold under the Mazda brand. The Series 7 was also sold in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Series 7 RX-7s were produced only in right-hand-drive configuration. Series 8 (1999-2002) only sold in the Japanese market. More efficient turbochargers were installed, while improved intercooling and radiator cooling was made possible by a revised frontal area. Several special editions were released, most noticeably the Spirit-R, a super rare, race style FD that still fetches amazing used prices today.

-In North America, three models were offered; the base, the touring, and the R models. The touring FD had a sunroof, leather seats, and a complex Bose Acoustic Wave system. The R (R1 in 1993 and R2 in 1994–95) models featured stiffer suspensions, an aerodynamics package, suede seats, and Z-rated tires.

-Australia had a special high performance version of the RX-7 in 1995, dubbed the RX-7 SP. A road worthy version of the 12h endurance race car used in the Bathurst races. Only 35 were ever built, but the overall upgrades and reduced weight made it beat its arch-rival, the Porsche 911 RS CS.

-In the United Kingdom, for 1992, customers were offered only one version of the FD which was based on a combination of the US touring and base model. The FD continued to be imported to the UK till 1995. In 1998, saw a surge of interest following its appearances in videogames such as Gran Turismo, which meant an boom in Japanese imported cars.

Like the Nissan S-Chassis, the FD3S is popular for all genres of tuning. Dragging, Grip Racing, Drifting, Gymkhana, Spo-Com/LUX, the FD3S can be tuned to fit all niches. A big point in tuning the FD is the need for proper cooling. The Mazda Rotary doesn't take too well to heat and can easily blow if cooling goes unchecked. Apex Seals are also a point needing attention when going for big power. The 13B-REW has plenty of power options available from a variety of brands to choose from and is able to put out close to 360hp with basic Boost-Up tuning. There are plenty to RE Only tuners that have gained world renowned fame through tuning the FD3S. The biggest name attached to RE tuning is none other than RE-Amemiya, which has a massive catalog of parts for the FD as well as consistently presenting the world with a great demo cars at the annual Tokyo Auto Salon.
