The RX-8 was Mazdas followup on their very popular RX-7. The new RX was redesigned, and now sported 4 full seats, as well as freestyle doors. The new Renesis 1.3L rotary engine pumped out 250 bhp, powering the RX-8 from 0-100km/h in just 6.4 seconds. The overall rotational mass was reduced considerably, helped by a carbon fiber drive shaft. Overall weight was also kept down, by using aluminum doors and hoods. The RX-8 never quite reached the performance level set by the RX-7, but the many innovations in its design and its excellent driving dynamics has won it much praise and many awards.

At launch, the RX-8 was available in various models in different markets around the world. Standard models include:

6-speed manual "High Power" with a output of between 228 hp and 247 hp and a 9,000 rpm redline. This model was equivalent to the "Type S" trim in Japan. 5-speed manual "Standard Power" tuned to 189 hp with the redline reduced to 7,500 rpm. This was not available in North America.

4-speed automatic tuned to 189 hp in some markets, while the U.S. automatic is stated to deliver 212 hp. 6-speed automatic developing 212 hp and 216 N/m of torque with a redline at 7,500 rpm. This was the revised RENESIS, now with two extra intake ports.

The lack of power produced by the RX-8's non turbo Renesis engine has led to a variety of power upgrades to feed the RX-8 owner's need for speed. Intake, Exhaust, Superchargers, Turbochargers, and other go-fast parts are readily available to increase response and power of the new rotary engine. However, due to the engine's limits, some tuners ditch the Renesis all together and drop in the FD3S 13B-REW engine. Despite its lack of power, the SE3P has plenty of aftermarket support in all aspects of tuning. Suspension, Aero Parts, Interior, Handling, Exhaust. You name it, there is something available from the continually growing list of parts available for the SE3P RX-8.
