The Airtrek was a compact crossover SUV introduced in 2001, it was exported under the Outlander badge, and in 2003 it was re-badged as the Outlander globally.

The first generation Airtreks featured either a 126 PS (93 kW) 4G63 2.0 L engine, or a 139 PS (102 kW) 4G64 2.4L GDI engine, with a standard INVECS-II 4-speed semi-automatic transmission. A turbo version was introduced in 2002, producing 240 PS (180 kW) and 343 N/m (253 lb/ft), with the export market vehicles reduced to 202 PS (149 kW) and 303 N/m (223 lb/ft). The four-wheel drive version featured normal differentials for the front and rear, with a viscous center LSD. The Japanese Outlander started production in 2003, with a modified front grille and headlights, making it 130 millimeters longer, The two models were manufactured in parallel.

In 2005, the Airtrek badge was dropped, and the 2. generation was called Outback, sporting a brand new DOHC 2.4 L 16-valve MIVEC engine, with INVECS-III, CVT and Mitsubishi's AWC system which gave it superior handling. The U.S. Version used the 6B31 3.0 L V6 SOHC MIVEC engine. The Outlander now featured Mitsubishi's RISE safety body.
