about Eclipse

The Eclipse has been produced by Mitsubishi since 1989, and has been sold abroad though their business partner Chrysler under the names Eagle Talon and the Plymouth Laser.

The 1994 edition Mitsubishi Eclipse was a four-cylinder sports coupe, available in both turbo and NA versions. The available 4G37 and 4G63 engines were both I4 gasoline engines. The 4G63 features a iron engine block and aluminum head, and was available with turbocharger, and minor upgrades such as oil squirters to better handle the stress and heat. The mid gen. minor adjustments in '92 removed the pop up headlights, and had updated sheet-metal.

The 2nd. gen. Eclipse was launched in 1995, featuring big updates to the styling and new engines available. In 1996 a convertible Spyder also joined the line-up. The Eclipse now featured a non-turbo 4G64 engine or a turbo 4G63. the turbocharged model was upgraded to output 210 hp. All engines were 4-cylinder gasoline.

1999 saw the 3rd. gen. Eclipse introduced. 2 new engines were offered, a 150 hp 2.4 L 16 valve SOHC 4-cylinder engine, known as the 4G64, and a 205 hp 24v SOHC 3.0 L V6 engine, the 6G72. Suspension was also tweaked to give a softer and more comfortable ride. The new platform was shared with the 8th generation Galant. A number of different trims were available, all of them FWD, slightly heavier than the previous gen. 2001 saw a small power decrease to 200 hp. A special GTS model trim was introduced in '03, featuring an engine upgrade, MVIM, 10 more horsepower and a slightly improved power curve. '03-'05 also featured a V6 Spyder convertible in the domestic market.

The newest 4th. generation Eclipse was released in 2006. This series of FWD Eclipses came with either a 163 hp (123 kW) 2.4 L MIVEC I4 engine or a 265 hp (193.9 kW) 3.8 L MIVEC V6 engine. The 4th. gen. Spyder was released in 07. The Eclipse is still in production, and the most powerful model so far has been the Eclipse GT: Hardtop, featuring a 263 hp 3.8 L 24-valve SOHC Mitsubishi engine, the 6G75.

The Eclipse has never been officially released in Japan. However the Eclipse is a highly popular grey market car, imported by USDM car enthusiasts. Since its debut in the first Fast and the Furious movie, the Eclipse's popularity as a tuner car has skyrocketed, becoming a major tuning base for the Spo-Com style alongside the Civic and Integra.
