MITSUBISHI GTO 3000GT
about GTO 3000GT
The Mitsubishi GTO was sold under a few different names, called the 3000GT in export markets. In North America it was sold as the Dodge Stealth, a as a captive import by Chrysler. This sports grand tourer car was sold from 1990.
The first generation utilized many of the new technologies at the time, all wheel drive, 4-wheel steering, active aerodynamics on the front & rear spoilers, a tuneable exhaust and electronically controlled suspension (ECS). The car was easily recognizable with its pop-up head lights and an special hood design.
The second generation GTO was introduced in 1994, and a number of changes had been made. The revised GTO featured a new front bumper, projector lighting, smoother hood and rear bumper. The interior was also updated and redesigned, now featuring dual airbags. The engine was tweaked to pump out a little extra torque, and the VR-4 now included a six-speed Getrag manual transmission. To help keep the price down, many of the electronics were eventually removed, tunable exhaust in 1994, ECS in 1995 and active aerodynamics in 1996.
The 3rd. gen. GTO was released in 1997. Falling sales figures meant Mitsubishi dropped plans of a major facelift, and instead made minor cosmetic changes. The '97 GTO had a new front bumper, headlamps, turn signals, sail panels. The VR-4 featured a large wing distinguish it from previous models. All production was stopped in 2000, with sales ending the following year.
Mitsubishi's Flagship Sports Car, the GTO, is a very rare car to be seen in the aftermarket. 4WD, potent engine, getrag transmission, this car has all of the ingredients of being a serious competitor in Drag and Circuit competition. This point has been made on more than one occasion by GTO dedicated tuning garage, Pit Road M. The downfall to the GTO perhaps is its size and weight. However, there are parts still readily available for the GTO owner, from companies like the earlier mentioned Pit Road M and aero parts maker, Aerocraft Kaze to build a GTO that will surprise the competition in both looks and performance.
