MITSUBISHI Legnum Galant
about Legnum Galant
The Mitsubishi Galant was a Mitsubishi produced car produced since 1969. Since the 8th generation in 1996, a station wagon version has also been available, called the Legnum. The Galant has sold over 5 million vehicles so far, and its 9th generation is still in production.
Sixth generation
In 1987, the Sixth generation Galant was released with a taller and rounded exterior. Featuring a l4 engine, available with a 1.6 to 2.0 liter engine, and a turbocharged version available, providing up to 197 hp. 2 different transmission were available, a 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed manual. The 6th generation saw the introduction of the popular VR-4 series, which formed the basis of the '88 ~ '92 Mitsubishi rally car. The Galant's 4G63 two litre DOHC turbocharged engine and 4WD transmission was later used in the Lancer Evolution.
Seventh generation
The seventh generation Galant was released in 1992, and was available as a four-door sedan or five-door liftback. A Japan-only hardtop version called the Mitsubishi Emeraude was also released in 1992. This version featured double-wishbone and multi-link suspension. Since mitsubishi changed their rally car to the Lancer Evolution, the 7th gen. VR-4 was less of a cut-to-the-bone performance vehicle, equipped with a smooth V6 twin turbo engine. In '94, an upgraded GS version was available with a 160 hp (120 kW) twin cam engine, speed-sensitive steering, rear stabilizer bar, and manual transmission.
Eighth generation
The 8th generation Galant and Legnum was introduced in 1996. These models had further improved suspension, and the ES, LS and GTZ models were available with the 6G72 3.0 L V6 engine putting out 195 hp (145 kW) through a 4-speed automatic transmission. The performance VR-4 series sported an enlarged 2.5 L V6 twin turbo, and either a 5 speed manual or a INVECS-II transmission. The VR-4 was also available as the Legnum station wagon. In '98 Mitsubishi introduced the Aspire. Identical to the regular Galant this new model featured a gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine.
Ninth generation
2004 saw the release of the newest version Galant. This newly redesigned version featured a larger interior, and heavier weight. The all new 4G69 engine pushed horsepower up to 160, and the Galant was also available with a 3.8-liter V6 pumping out 235 hp. A Ralliart version was added in '07, upgrading the V6 to a respectable 258 hp along with several other performance and handling upgrades. The 9th generation galant is still in production.
Outshined by the Lancer Evolution, the Legnum and Galant do not have as big of a tuning base in Japan as is seems to be abroad. Galant and Legnum dedicated garages like Pro Shop Iida produce parts and mainstream companies like HKS and Trust Greddy also have parts available to add a sportier sound and feel your Mitsubishi. However, due to lack of popularity, tuning beyond the Boost-Up level may prove to be a bit of a challenge.
