about PL510 Bluebird

The Datsun PL510 Bluebird had a production span from 1968 to 1973 and was known outside of Japan as the "poor man's BMW". The 510 body style came in a two door sedan style, four sedan door style, five door station wagon style, and the sporty two door coupe style. The bluebird came with the L13, L14, L16 and sports version L18 engine. Transmission versions were 3 speed automatic and 4 speed manual. The Bluebird SSS series stands for Super Sports Sedan and these models all had exclusive parts that no other 510 came with. The L16 SSS Coupe model came with SU twin carburetors that make 100 PS at 6000 RPM and the body came with a different front grille, rear combination lamps and different interior. The later model L18 SSS engine made 115 PS.

The Bluebird 510 is a simple and reliable vehicle that offers the enthusiast affordable performance and easy upgrades. Common upgrades are the L20b engine with 5 speed transmission.

Much like the AE86, S30Z, and others, popularity of the 510 has yet to die out. Like all engines from this time, ITBs (Individual Throttle Bodies, Carbs, etc.), Cams, and other NA tuning options are the common choice. To keep up with much more modern Skylines and Silvia, the swapping of the SR20DET engine is also a popular tuning strategy for the 510. In the past, the 510 was popularly used in circuit and rally competitions. But because of their dwindling numbers, seeing them at a tuning venue now such as the drag strip or circuit would be a rare thing. They do however show in great numbers during nostalgic cars showed and other older tuning car events.
