about S13 Silvia 180SX

The S13 Silvia, or 200SX was introduced in 1989, and became a hit in Japan. S13 Silvia switched to replaceable, fixed type headlights. Projector optics were offered as an option.

The Silvia fastback-style rear was discontinued, and in its place Nissan launched the new S180SX, sharing the S platform. Pop-up headlights were still a staple feature. Nissans multi-link rear suspension was also brought in to the light by the S13. It also offered a four-wheel steering system for the first time, known as HICAS-II, later updated to the SuperHICAS. The S13 also offered viscous limited slip differential, for some models.

S13 Silvias were initially powered by the CA18DE and CA18DET engines, with an intercooler added to the CA18DET. In mid 1990, the SR20DE and SR20DET engines debuted, offering improvements across the board in power and torque due to increased displacement and a more efficient turbocharger than was offered on the previous cars. The SR motor later debuted another variant of the platform known simply as the 'Black Top'. Identifiable by its black and silver rocker-cover, it featured a number of minor changes, resulting in a small amount of performance gain.

The Nissan 180SX was introduced to the domestic japanese market in 1989, as a sister model to the popular S13. The 180SX ended up outliving the S13, keeping production going through the next generation of silvias as well. The shape of the SX was roughly the same as the S13, as it shared the same basic chassis. The most notable distinguishing features were the pop-up headlights and a fastback roof with a liftgate.

180SX was originally a reference to the 1.8 liter engine size of the CA18DET engine. However In 1991 the engine was changed to a 2.0 liter model. Although the new engine was of larger displacement, the 180SX name remained.

The definitive "Drift Car," the S13 Silvia/180SX is the most popular tuning base car available in Japan. Coupled with the emergence and growth of Drifting in the late 80's and into the present day, tuning parts available for the S13 Silvia/180SX overshadow all of its peers in the tuning world. Not only is the popularity of the S13 strong within Japan, with the spread of Drifting throughout the world, the S13's popularity has increased outside of Japan. Today, great examples of tuned S13 Silvias and 180's rivaling the best within Japan can be seen throughout the world. Power wise, a simple Boost-Up level tune can increase the power output of the S13 SR20DET engine from 205ps to the 250 ~ 260ps range. A popular upgrade for the S13 engines is replacing the stock T-25 turbine with the larger T-28 found in the S14 and S15 Silvias, giving the S13 the ability to achieve the 300ps mark. For the CA18 engines, the S13 SR20 engine's T-25 turbine is considered to be a great upgrade over the CA's stock turbine.
