NISSAN Z31 Fairlady Z 300ZX
about Z31 Fairlady Z 300ZX
The Z31 was first brought to market in 1983, and featured a 3.0 liter V6 NA VG30E or Turbocharged VG30ET, producing 160 and 200 horsepower. In May 1987 the W Spec was introduced, providing various engine upgrades, to reach 165 and 205 hp. In Japan, 2.0 Liter engine models were released, to meet a lower Japanese taxation bracket. The Z31 chassis was largely based on the 280ZX. Featuring the same wheelbase, and MacPherson suspension, it still managed to improve handling acceleration. The Shiro Special edition further featured a new development, 3-way electronic shock absorbers.
Over the years the Z31 body was revised slightly several times. In 1986, side skirts, fender flares and 16 inch wheels where added. In 1987 the upgrades extended to aero bumpers, fog lights, and newer, brighter headlights, using the 9004 bulbs. The Z31 proved hugely popular, and continued to sell into 1989. More than 70,000 units were sold in 1985 alone.
The Z31 was a popular tuning base for grip and drag racers upon release. The VG30ET packed a powerful punch during its time and made the Z31 the fasted Japanese car money could by until the release of the Toyota 70 Supra. The RB20 was also a popular tuning choice, with its lower tuning costs compared to the VG.
