TOYOTA ST165 185 205 Celica
about ST165 185 205 Celica
The Celica was a sports coupe line up started by Toyota in 1970. The most famous Celicas might be the Toyota Celica GT-Fours, the ST165 185 205 Celicas are listed separately as such.
ST165 185 205 Celica
The Celica was a sports coupe line up started by Toyota in 1970. The most popular of Celica models may be the Toyota Celica GT-Fours, the ST165 185 205. The Celica GT-Four models are special high performance model of the Celica, featuring a turbocharged 3S-GTE engine, and AWD. The GT-Four models were created to compete in the World Rally Championship. The regulations of the WRC dictate that certain number of road going vehicles were needed to be manufactured in order to complete. The Celica GT-Fours had great success in the World Rally Championship, taking several victories. Unfortunately Toyota has decided to concentrate on Formula One, ending the line.
ST165 (1986-1989)
The first GT-Four was a liftback released in 1986. The ST165 is similar to the Celica, but features larger front bumper openings and a Differential Lock Switch. The Celica GT-Four ST165 made its World Rally Championship (WRC) debut in the 1988, on Tour de Corse, but the first WRC victory came in the 1989 Rally Australia.
-ST165 won 13 WRC series. Carlos Sainz won the 1990 WRC Driver's Title.
ST185 (1989-1993)
The 2nd generation GT-Four was released in 1989 and featured a number of upgrades, such as the air-to-air intercooler and CT26 twin entry turbo. This gave it 225 PS (165 kW) of power and 304 Nm of torque. It also features a 4WD LSD with a viscous coupling. The ST185's maiden WRC was in the 1992 Safari Rally, and won four events in that year. The ST185 is Toyota's most successful rally car. It won the WRC Driver's Championship in 1992, and the WRC Manufacturer's and Driver's Championships in 1993 and 1994.
-ST185 won 16 full WRC series, and 3 overall winner in the W2L series. WRC Driver's Titles with Carlos Sainz in 1992, Juha Kankkunen in 1993, and Didier Auriol in 1994. WRC Manufacturer's Titles in 1993 and 1994.
ST205 (1994-1999)
The last and most powerful of the GT-Fours was the ST205, released in 1994. Boasting up to 255PS from the updated 3S-GTE engine, reduction in weight, ABS, and bigger turbo, this GT-Four was able to take several more wins for Toyota in the WRC. The ST205 came in late 1994, and became official rally car in 1995 with one WRC victory. It also won the 1996 European Rally Championship.
-ST205 won 1 full WRC series, and 2 overall winner in the W2L series.
Like many other Toyotas, the Celica GT-Four is considered a niche tuning car. As impressive as its WRC heritage is, the Celica GT-Four has been unable to become a mainstream tuning car like the Silvia, Skyline, Supra, your JZX Tourer V. This of course doesn't mean that crazy builds have not been done. Aftermarket support is available from major tuning brands. Exhaust, Suspension, Aero Parts, and more are available to build up your own unique Celica GT-Four.
