The Toyota RAV4 was an Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive according to Toyota. This compact crossover SUV was built to combine the practicality of a large SUV with the fuel economy and handling of a smaller car. Launched in 1994 in Japan, Europe and in the U.S. in 1996, the RAV4 was a first of its kind, starting a new wave of crossover cars. Originally based on the Corolla, the RAV4 featured a 2.0 L straight-4 producing 120 hp (89 kW), and was available with front or all wheel drive. Available as a 2 door or 4 door SUV. An electric RAV 4 EV was offered for a short time in California.
